National Careers Expo Media Launch at Maropeng

The Maropeng Visitor Centre at the Cradle of Humankind came alive on September 12, 2023, as industry leaders, government officials, and media representatives gathered in one of its conference rooms for the National Careers Expo (NTCE) media launch. The event, themed “Tourism Investment for People, Planet, and Prosperity,” set the stage for an engaging discussion on the pivotal role of tourism in job creation and sustainability. The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. Fish Mahlalela, took centre stage to deliver a compelling speech that emphasized the importance of the tourism sector in South Africa’s economic future.

Mr. Mahlalela, in his address, began by acknowledging the milestone of NTCE’s 13th year. He emphasized the significance of this longevity, highlighting how the event has been instrumental in connecting young talent with opportunities in the dynamic tourism industry. “Tourism is the world’s fastest-growing employment sector that continues to adapt to new trends,” he stated. “South Africa is, therefore, rebuilding the sector to ensure its sustainability for future generations.”

The Deputy Minister emphasized the need for a holistic approach to tourism, one that considers the well-being of people, the preservation of our planet, and economic prosperity. He outlined several key initiatives and strategies that the South African government is pursuing to promote tourism as a driver of employment and economic growth.

The event’s other speakers including the representatives from the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, and CATHSSET, representing various facets of the tourism industry, responded positively to Mr. Mahlalela’s vision. They recognized the potential for tourism to play a pivotal role in South Africa’s economic recovery post-pandemic and its ability to create employment opportunities for the country’s youth.

The media launch of the National Careers Expo at the Maropeng Visitor Centre was a resounding success, setting the stage for a promising future for the tourism sector in South Africa. As the NTCE continues its mission of connecting aspiring individuals with opportunities in tourism, the Deputy Minister’s words serve as a reminder of the industry’s importance in building a sustainable and prosperous future for all South Africans. The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA), will host the 2023 National Tourism Careers Expo (NTCE) at the Joburg Expo Centre in Nasrec from 29 September to 01 October 2023, inviting learners to learn more about careers in Tourism, interact with industry professionals and meet their possible future employers.
